The nineteenth century has been very neglected in studies of translation censorship to date. This volume addresses this gap in research, showing how discourse was filtered by official and unofficial censorship mechanisms against a background of massive political and technological change. The volume brings together eleven essays on censorship of literature, philosophy and the press in Austro-Hungary, Belgium, Finland, France, Germany, Great Britain, Portugal, Russia and Spain.

Curso de Tradução para Legendagem de Filmes: Teoria, Técnica e Prática

Inscrições abertas. Curso ministrado por Carolina Alfaro de Carvalho na PUC do Rio de Janeiro em julho de 2011. Será a sexta turma especializada em legendagem de filmes formada na PUC-Rio desde 2007, desta vez em formato intensivo, com aulas à manhã e à tarde. Será oferecida uma só turma, destinada a tradutores do inglês para o português. A carga horária do curso foi aumentada de 36 para 42 horas, todas em laboratório de informática e sempre trabalhando com exercícios reais de legendagem para cinema, DVD e televisão, explorando diferentes métodos e ferramentas de trabalho. Diversas produtoras de vídeo têm procurado o curso para selecionar os melhores alunos para atuarem como tradutores.

* Pré-requisitos: excelente domínio das línguas portuguesa e inglesa; preferencialmente experiência com tradução de textos; ótimo domínio de Windows, editores de textos, ferramentas de internet e recursos computacionais

The School wishes to appoint a Lecturer to contribute to a range of programmes across the School, both at undergraduate and postgraduate level. Applicants will be expected to have proven experience of teaching in the areas of Translation Studies and Technical/Professional Communication at university level.

We are looking for a versatile individual with the following skill set; fluency in a foreign language, professional translation experience, expertise in translation technologies (CAT tools) and in technical and professional writing.

Applicants should possess a PhD (or be nearing completion) in translation and/or technical communication. The capacity to teach both in classroom and online environments will be an advantage. The successful candidate will also be research- and/or knowledge transfer-active and will be expected to contribute to the profile of the School and/or CEISR [the research centre for European and International Studies] in these areas.

Perdida entre Ana Blinder e Amy Chua

Sei que o assunto que resolvi abordar neste artigo é piegas. Mas realmente, profundamente, pergunto: o que está acontecendo com o mundo?

Um exemplo: a educação dos filhos. Vejo absurdos acontecendo todos os dias. Sempre estou com as antenas ligadas no assunto, por vários motivos: sou mãe (de uma adolescente e de uma bebezoca), educadora e psicopedaboba.

Há uns tantos domingos atrás estava lendo o jornal e me deparo com um editorial sobre a vida dos pais dos adolescentes de hoje. Em forma crítica e sarcástica, mas numa tentativa de retratar a realidade, o jornalista contava a história de um pobre pai que não fazia mais que levar e trazer seus filhos adolescentes de lá para cá, todos os fins de semana, numa verdadeira romaria social. Os filhos exigindo de última hora coisas estapafúrdias para poder cumprir com suas agendas atribuladíssimas e o coitado do pai, tentando ser moderno e compreendê-los, revestido no papel de chofer – dos filhos e dos amigos dos filhos. Vamos ao ponto: na história, em determinado momento em que os filhos têm vergonha do carro do pai (que não era tão novo como o dos pais dos amigos mais abastados), o tratam como ser fosse realmente o chofer. No final o infeliz pai endoidou, deixou a todos no carro no meio da rua e saiu pelo mundo, a pé, sem nunca mais voltar nem deixar rastro.

Passo uns dias mais e vejo o boom sobre o artigo da Amy Chua, a asiática que decidiu criar as filhas na mais tradicional maneira chinesa. Casada com um judeu americano, Amy (advogada e professora de Direito em Yale, ou seja, não estamos falando de nenhuma anta – por favor, sociedades protetoras dos animais, me perdoem o uso do animal como exemplo de algo negativo, é apenas um ícone social representativo, ok?) escreveu um livro, título em inglês Battle Hymn of The Tiger, que está dando o que falar. Agora, todas as organizações “politicamente corretas” querem a pele da Dra. Chua. Isto porque ela ousou dizer como educou (e educa) as filhas, fora dos padrões da tão maravilhosa sociedade atual, onde um puxão de orelhas é considerado abuso e maltrato infantil.

Ando um pouco mais entre um artigo e outro e, conversando com meu próprio marido, israelita que viveu no Canadá a maior parte de sua vida, fico perplexa diante dos exemplos que ele me dá de como a sociedade canadense resolve seus problemas e se coloca no patamar do “absolutamente politicamente correto”. Conto apenas uma das tantas histórias que ouvi: se seu filho se jogar no chão no meio do Shopping, berrando como um animal enjaulado, chutando suas pernas e chorando como um cão sarnento, nem ouse pensar em dar-lhe um corretivo, como por exemplo, pegar pelo braço e mandar literalmente “fecha o boca ou te mato”. Ele (seu filho) pode dirigir-se à polícia e denunciá-lo (a); esta, sem mais delongas, virá até sua casa e lhe perguntará quem você pensa que é para maltratar uma indefesa criancinha dessa maneira, sem contar que podem levá-lo até a chefatura e deixá-lo lá de molho uns dias. Ou ainda alguém que está ao redor assistindo tal cena dantesca pode também lhe denunciar. Lindo, não?

Passa um dia ou dois mais e encontro o artigo da Ana Blinder, filha do Caio Blinder, colunista da Veja em Nova York. A menina escreve muito bem, diga-se de passagem. Ela delicadamente critica Amy Chua e coloca sua própria família como bom exemplo de como educar. Pelo que li no artigo da Ana, a educação da família Blinder deu certo e é baseada em deveres e direitos, limites e conversas. Ana é uma adolescente bem colocada, lúcida, inteligente. Nunca li nada que as filhas de Amy Chua tenham escrito, por isso não posso dizer o mesmo delas. Tampouco posso dizer que não o sejam.

Vamos ao “x” da minha questão: não estou dizendo que Amy Chua esteja certa, não me entendam mal. Também não conheço a família Blinder intimamente para poder dar meu pitaco na educação da Ana. Mas posso dizer o seguinte: por que diabo hoje em dia está tão difícil educar nossos filhos? Por que eu não posso educar minhas filhas como me aprouver, sem interferência social ditando regras sócio-psico-pedago corretas? Quero com isso questionar: é bonito contar a história do infeliz pai que trabalhava de segunda a sexta e nos fins de semana era o chofer humilhado dos filhos “aborrescentes”, sem direito à vida própria?

O que é isso, minha gente... Minha indignação não tem tamanho... Estamos perdendo o prumo, o norte, estamos destruindo a sociedade. Vejo-me na obrigação de gritar, de dizer algo, numa peleja minha contra este movimento hipócrita. A coisa toda é tão grande que os valores estão todos distorcidos, controversos. É uma briga constante, uma luta diária. Todo um discurso para demonstrar valores que, até pouco tempo atrás, eram óbvios. Como pode uma sociedade formar-se a partir de jovens que assistem a programas como “Paris Hilton e sua nova BFF”, (onde ela, no intuito de descobrir sua nova Best Friend Forever usa e abusa de um grupo de jovens). O que se pode esperar?

Tenho que entender como normal que devemos explicar aos filhos desse infeliz pai-chofer o que é correto? Querem que eu acredite que eles não sabem que abusam do pai? E o que faz esse pai? Está dando atestado de estúpido, perdoem a expressão? Onde está o famoso “pátrio poder”, que na verdade de poder, coitado, já não tem mais nada? De pátrio, então...

Vejo pais em lojas do Shopping pedindo desculpas aos filhos porque não podem comprar “aquele” tênis importado, ou o novo iPod, ou a tal mochila “x” ... Desculpas? Desde quando? Já não basta com pagar escola, comprar comida, roupas boas, sapatos, uniformes, material escolar, transporte, dinheiro para festas, shopping, cinemas, MC qualquer porcaria ou Burguer qualquer coisa... Eles (os filhos) têm que ter o tênis da moda, o óculos de sol do momento, o perfume importado (pelamordedeus, porque uma criança de 13 anos tem que usar perfume importado, alguém me explica?), a bolsa Gucci. Os pais desejam demonstrar SEU poderio social através dos filhos e acabam criando verdadeiros monstros! Depois, queixam-se de como esta sociedade valoriza mais o TER que o SER. Pura hipocrisia.

E não pensem em cobrar uma nota melhor ou achar ruim as notas baixas, porque senão vocês, pais, estão “valorizando o negativo”. Ele/ela tirou dez em Educação Física e três em todo o resto? Não importa, pai; deixa pra lá, mãe. Esqueçam o quanto gastaram em professor particular e quantas noites não dormiram. Valorizem o dez em Educação Física! SEJA UM PAI POSITIVO não importa o quanto lhe custe! Chega a ser ridículo.

E que ningúem venha me dizer que não acho esporte importante, antes de me conhecerem. Muito pelo contrário, valorizo e MUITO os esportes. Mas há limites para tudo. Acho que nossos filhos têm muito mais capacidade do que lhes exigimos. Não há nada de errado em exigir-lhes que façam seu melhor, que estudem, que extrapolem limites. Por eles mesmos, para que saibam ser bons no que fazem.

Ah, antes que me esqueça, mais uma "dica da moderna educação": não interrompa seu pimpolho quando ele/ela estiver falando, porque senão você não está sendo “acolhedor” e a criança de 16 anos vai se fechar. Daí, meu amigo, foi-se! Das poucas palavras que você conseguia extorquir não ouvirá nada mais do que “É”. Mas o resto continua igual. Você perde o único direito que ainda tinha e continua com TODOS os outros deveres. Mas continua respeitando a "liberdade" do seu filho. Muito bonito... E nossa liberdade de sermos pais e mães, onde fica? E a obrigação deles em RESPONDER, SEMPRE?

Lembro-me de uma história da família de minha mãe, italianos. Reza a lenda que meu avô sempre dizia a todos os filhos, em determinada idade: “Filho meu ou trabalha ou estuda. Não crio vagabundo(a)”. Deve ter funcionado, porque todos os 6 filhos, incluindo minha mãe, são pessoas de bem. Não houve nenhum relato de que algum deles fosse um mimado convicto, ultra mega exigente e desrespeitoso. Que eu saiba nenhum usou drogas ou tomou mais álcool do que devia, nem engravidou antes da idade. E, pasmem, nenhum precisou de psicólogo para consertar seus traumas. Pelo menos não estes. Muito pelo contrário, falam desses pais com tanto amor que me enternece quando ouço.

Está bem, não quero nem pretendo voltar àqueles tempos. Mas um pouco de temor paterno não viria mal, não. Amar os pais soaria bem. Os filhos esqueceram quem são os pais. Não há mais nenhuma hierarquia familiar, nada. Ninguém manda, os direitos são todos iguais. Como iguais? Quem trabalha? Quem paga as contas? Quem tem TODAS as responsabilidades? Quem organiza a vida da família? Os filhos ou os pais?

Hoje em dia a “onda” é ser amigo dos filhos. “Peraí”: ou sou pai e mãe ou sou amigo. As duas coisas, não dá, não funciona, criamos um abismo de limites e valores na cabeça de nossos filhos. Posso ser um pai ou mãe amigável, moderno, entender meus filhos em seus diversos estágios, valorizar o positivo, etc. e tal, mas sou pai, sou mãe. Eles têm que confiar em nós como tal, reconhecer este personagem dentro da família, respeitar esta posição. E isso não teria que ser nenhuma obrigação, porque é óbvio. Pais e mães deveriam ensinar dentro de casa, no seio familiar.

Não posso e não devo deixá-los esquecer disso, nunca. Sou quem os trouxe ao mundo, que velou pelo seu sono, que cuidou quando estavam doentes, que não dormiu esperando que chegassem tarde, que cozinhou a comida balanceada para que eles crescessem saudáveis, que brigou ensinando a tabuada, que colocou os limites, que disse não quinhentos milhões de vezes, que saiu correndo comprar aquele sapato da moda para ir ao Shopping com a amiga, que puxou a orelha, que chorou junto, que riu junto, que pagou o professor de matemática, que foi buscar na festinha às duas da manhã de pijama, que ensinou valores, que obrigou a fazer o que não queria (muitas vezes), que disse que tinha obrigações, que acordava cedo todos os dias para fazer o café da manhã... Será que temos que re ensinar nossos filhos a ter essa memória emocional? Não vem de fábrica, mais, não? Antes vinha... Como que a sociedade perdeu os valores morais. O resultado é claro, basta olhar ao redor e escutar as notícias.

Hoje ao entrar num transporte público vêem-se os velhinhos em pé e os jovens sentados. E, o pior, os pais dos jovens fingindo que não estão vendo. Verdade, a educação começa em casa. E as famílias estão falhando grandemente. Porque é tão, tão, tão mais fácil deixar na mão de outros, não é verdade? Substituímos nossa obrigação emocional pelo prazer material, e com isso tiramos de nossas costas o peso e o stress de educar. Filho dá trabalho? Então as escolhas são: comprar um computador novo e colocar a criatura até as três da manhã no Facebook. Contratar TV a cabo e fingir que não saber que assistem programas inúteis e fúteis. Encher o guarda roupas de artigos não necessários. Mandar para o Shopping a tarde toda com a desculpa de que “ali é fechado, é um ambiente seguro”. Comprar o último celular assim ele(ela) pode passar horas mandando SMS para todos os amigos. E segue a lista.

Passamos a tarefa de educar à escola (que está interessada em tirar nosso dinheiro e não em educar nossos filhos), aos psicólogos (que sem dúvida são importantes, mas em geral educam seus próprios filhos à bela e antiga maneira e nos dizem que temos que ser modernos com os nossos), às babás, às avós, à televisão, ao computador...

Quando vejo minha filha de 14 anos, caminhando para os quinze, se debatendo entre o que aprende em casa e o que vê fora, morro de pena. É uma luta interior: valores x a falta deles. É triste, muito triste. Ela é uma garota muito especial, inteligente, esperta, educada. Tem os valores que lhe passamos até agora já inseridos. Mas sofre, por ser uma das poucas que é assim; a maioria não o é. E ela se questiona e nos conta o que acontece e nos questiona. Difícil ter que mostra que o óbvio está correto, ainda que pertencente a uma minoria. Resta-nos continuar insistindo e valorizando-a por ser assim. Ajudá-la que não esmoreça, que não se deixe levar. Que continue firme em seus valores.

Temos pouco tempo para terminar de criá-la, logo estará caminhando com suas próprias pernas. Como pais, meu marido e eu sabemos que nos restam com sorte, mais dois anos. As sementes que colocarmos até aí, ficarão. Pais, eu vos peço solenemente: digam NÃO aos seus filhos, sem temor. Coloquem limites. Imponham obrigações. Ensinem respeito, valores. Preocupem-se. Não durmam. Briguem, discutam, ensinem. Seus filhos precisam de PAIS e MÃES. O mundo precisa desesperadamente deste movimento. A sociedade, desta mudança.

Ou o abismo da ignorância e do egoísmo será tão grande que não haverá mais tempo para fechá-lo.

A tradução é uma área que vem ganhando atenção crescente no mundo globalizado. A comunicação entre os profissionais da área é fundamental para que todos possam crescer e desenvolver habilidades voltadas para o aumento da produtividade, melhora da qualidade e diminuição do tempo de produção de textos traduzidos.

CHAMADA DE TRABALHOS

A edição 2010 do Simpósio Profissão Tradutor (PROFT 2010), em comemoração aos cinco anos do YahooGroup Profissão Tradutor, tem por objetivo reunir os integrantes da lista, atuais e futuros, para troca de experiências e de conhecimentos da área, além de ser uma "boa desculpa" para nos conhecermos pessoalmente, nos revermos ou simplesmente aprofundarmos contatos profissionais.

Desde esta perspectiva, la Terminología se transforma en una herramienta indispensable para que las lenguas de cultura puedan expresar, por medio de recursos terminológicos propios, los conocimientos científico-técnicos adquiridos y creados en los diferentes ámbitos profesionales. La Terminología ya no se concibe solo como una disciplina científica, sino que se ha transformado en una actividad íntimamente vinculada a la cooperación interinstitucional e internacional y a la planificación lingüística, que contribuye al fortalecimiento de las lenguas dentro de los diferentes ámbitos.

The MONTEREY FORUM, launched in 2007, provides a venue to discuss new trends and issues in translator, interpreter and localizer (TIL) education. Following the success of the conferences held in 2007 and 2009, we are pleased to announce that the third MONTEREY FORUM will take place on April 8 and 9, 2011, at the Monterey Institute of International Studies in California.

The theme of the MONTEREY FORUM 2011 is Innovations in Translator, Interpreter and Localizer Education. Technological advances and rapid changes in economic, social and political conditions have paved the way for new developments in the practice of translation, interpreting and localization.

The MONTEREY FORUM 2011 will review innovations found in the current curriculum and syllabus design and implementation in the real or virtual classroom, with a view to matching the evolving expectations of the market. During our discussion the goal will be to learn from innovations implemented by TIL educators around the world in addressing new challenges and requirements.

Call for papers

TIL educators are invited to contribute a paper (a 20-minute presentation followed by a 10-minute discussion) on their teaching practices.

We are especially interested in approaches to:
- incorporating translation technology into your translation classes
- teaching revising, editing and MT post-editing skills
- designing and delivering on-line courses
- introducing different modalities of consecutive interpreting
- developing simultaneous interpreting skills into one's B language
- bringing authenticity into classroom exercises
- blending theory and practice in TIL classes
- designing curriculum in response to the new requirements of the market
- building effective assessment into the curriculum

Please submit your abstract (no more than 300 words) with your name, affiliation and contact information to montereyforum2011@miis.edu by November 15, 2010. Notification of acceptance will be sent by December 15, 2010.

This year's school is hosted by the University of Stellenbosch in Stellenbosch. The Spring School is presented for doctoral/master's students and/or lecturers in translation studies and intercultural communication from all over Africa with the aim of working towards an African agenda for translation studies. Esta palestra oferece um panorama das seis traduções do Quixote publicadas no Brasil e biografias de seus tradutores. As publicações foram organizadas em um catálogo com detalhes editoriais das setenta e duas edições da obra, e os dados foram tabulados, oferecendo um quadro com a porcentagem de edições por tradutor. Ao final farei uma pequena revisão teórica dos estudos em historiografia da tradução utilizados para elaborar a metodologia utilizada em minha dissertação de mestrado, a qual foi adaptada às condições e ferramentas de pesquisa disponíveis dentro da realidade brasileira.

"Good translation is something precious and rare, it lives on in the history of language and affects language no less, sometimes even more, than original works," wrote Miłosz in his essay Gorliwość tłumacza. The poet's translations, from books of the Bible to contemporary poetry, are an integral part of his ouvre. Miłosz's original work, composed always in Polish, has been translated into numerous languages. Therefore, its worldwide reception has been shaped by translations, both prepared by the Nobel laureate himself, frequently in cooperation with poets of other languages, and created by eminent translators of Polish literature. Miłosz himself translated into English other twentieth-century Polish poets, making them available to English-speaking readers.

On the 100th anniversary of the poet's birthday the editors of "Przekładaniec" welcome contributions for the special issue devoted to Czesław Miłosz as translator and focusing on questions connected with translating his poetry and prose. The 2011 issue will gather reports by various translators, as well as academic articles discussing individual texts or their broader literary and historical context, where Miłosz-translator or Miłosz in translation played a major role.

Scope
Television Interpreting (TI) is still a largely under-researched area, as compared both to other forms of audiovisual translation, such as subtitling and dubbing and other institutional settings of what is known as Dialogue Interpreting, such as health care, immigration services and courtroom interpreting.
The aim of this special issue on TI is to bring together the state-of-art research results. Our intention is to provide a place where researchers, practitioners and broadcasters from diverse communities can present their different perspectives in this field. The goal is to reach a better understanding of similarities/differences in this particular form of interpreting. The editors invite contributions that address conceptual, theoretical, methodological and practical issues of TI.
Papers must be submitted in English or French and describe original research which is neither published nor currently under review by other journals or conferences.

Submitted manuscripts will be subject to a process of peer review.

Topics of interest
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:
- TI vs. Conference Interpreting and other interpreting activities
- Analyses of interpreter performance
- The creation of TI corpora
- Interpreting modalities (simultaneous, consecutive, hybrid forms) and media genres (talk shows, news, media events, etc.)
- Monologue vs. dialogue formats in TI
- Interactional aspects of TI (the interpreter's mediation function, role and identity negotiation, the relations between on-screen and off-screen participants, etc.)
- Interpreters as journalists and journalists as interpreters
- TI vs. news reporting, commentary and editing

Se convoca a traductores, profesores e investigadores en el campo de la traducción literaria a participar en la XIX emisión del
ENCUENTRO INTERNACIONAL DE TRADUCTORES LITERARIOS
que tendrá lugar en la ciudad de México del 6 al 8 de octubre de 2010 y cuyo tema central será "Traductores e investigadores: ¿vecinos distantes?"

A medida que se van diversificando y especializando las investigaciones sobre la traducción, el hiato entre traductores e investigadores se hace más patente. No son pocos los traductores literarios que afirman que los teóricos y los investigadores en el campo de la traducción no traducen, y estos últimos en ocasiones no
conceden al ejercicio de la traducción el lugar que se merece. ¿Por qué se alejan cada vez más estos dos grupos de profesionales de la traducción, cuando por el contrario deberían mantener un diálogo permanente? ¿Hasta qué punto las estructuras de los sistemas académico y editorial acentúan este distanciamiento que en realidad no es nuevo?

Los invitamos a presentar, debatir, confrontar y divulgar sus reflexiones, investigaciones o talleres en torno a éstas y muchas otras cuestiones relacionadas con el ejercicio de la práctica y la investigación en el campo de la traducción.

ORGANIZACIÓN DEL ENCUENTRO Y FORMAS DE PARTICIPACIÓN

MESAS Y PANELES
- Mesas de tres ponentes y un moderador
- Cada ponencia tendrá una duración máxima de 20 minutos
- Al final habrá un tiempo limitado para el debate y la participación del público
Los interesados deberán enviar una sinopsis (entre 250 y 300 palabras) y un currículum vítae resumido.

TALLERES
- El español tendrá que ser obligatoriamente lengua de partida o de llegada del taller.
- Tendrán una duración de 3 a 4 horas
- No se abrirán los talleres que, al momento de dar inicio, no cuenten con un mínimo de cuatro participantes inscritos

Los interesados deberán enviar un resumen (entre 100 y 150 palabras, con el tema, el título y las indicaciones del material de apoyo requerido: cañón, proyector de acetatos, etc.) y un currículum vítae resumido en el que se especifique la experiencia previa como tallerista.

The Micro-Turn in Translation Studies: Translation within the United States

Translation studies in the United States is quite a new discipline: the American Translation and Interpreting Studies Association (ATISA) has been in existence for less than ten years; out of over 2500 universities, there are only 10 MA and two PhD programs; no history of translation in the United States has been written. Yet in the United States, over 150 languages are spoken, and one in five children are born into a non- or limited-English speaking family. Translation takes place
on a daily basis in the schools, hospitals, courts, and social service agencies. The United States has been analyzed often in terms of race, class, and gender, but seldom in terms of translation or language minorities. This looks at how translation functions in smaller communities in the United States--cities, communities, prisons, reservations, and individual families--operating more often than not in a hidden, counter-culture fashion at micro-levels of culture.

We are pleased to invite you to submit a paper to the I International Conference on Translation and Accessibility in Video Games and Virtual Worlds to be held by the Transmedia Catalonia Research Group at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona on 2-3 December 2010. Theme of the Conference

The widespread use of technologies characteristic of the digital area has dramatically changed our lives, shaping the way we communicate, access information, learn, work and entertain ourselves. Due to their interactive nature, new media have played a key role in the establishment of global virtual communities and social networks transcending national boundaries, posing new questions that need to be addressed. How do we interact with this new media? How have they
affected the way we interact with each other? What is the role of translation in an increasingly globalised world? How can we ensure that new media are accessible to all and avoid the digital divide? Issues such as globalisation, intercultural communication, video game and audiovisual production, audiovisual translation and media accessibility are well-established research areas. However, there is still a considerable knowledge gap in the areas of game localization
and accessibility, as well as accessibility to virtual worlds, also known as metaverses, and the role translation plays in them.

To date, academic studies focusing on game localization and accessibility of games and virtual worlds are few and far between, despite the fact that further research in localization and accessibility is beneficial to all. The industry can benefit by reaching the broadest possible audience, while the audience can benefit from having improved access to games and virtual worlds. Access is used in this context in a broad sense, to refer not only to users with functional diversity,
but also to those who due to age or skill are not able to play a game successfully, those who do not speak the original language of the metaverse or game, and those who due to socioeconomic conditions cannot access games and virtual platforms. Improving access to games and virtual worlds will foster the inclusion of different type of users, from language learners to the aged, including those with sensorial, motor or mental diversity and users deprived from access to new
technologies because of socioeconomic limitations.

A more systematic and interdisciplinary approach bringing together academics from different disciplines with various research backgrounds and methodologies, such as translation studies, media studies, psychology, usability, engineering and computing, human rights, is required to promote further advances in these areas of study. The I International Conference on Translation and Accessibility in Video Games and Virtual Worlds aims to be an interdisciplinary meeting point for
all those interested in the fields of game localisation and accessibility, as well as accessibility and the role of translation in virtual worlds. This pioneering conference aims at laying the foundations for future studies in these areas, become a discussion forum where industry and academia meet and promote interdisciplinary research. Suggested topics The I International Conference on Translation and Accessibility in Video Games and Virtual Worlds will cover the following topics: game
localisation process, standardisation, quality issues, development and use of specialised tools, the internationalisation process, cultural adaptation in games, dubbing and subtitling for games, localization of online games, localization of mobile games, fan translations, the use of eye-tracking technology for reception studies, accessibility to games for players with sensorial or motor diversity, accessibility to games for players with mental diversity, accessibility to virtual-reality
platforms, game audio design, design for all, the use of adaptive technologies, the use of speech recognition in virtual platforms, the role of translation in virtual worlds, children's human right to play, access to games and virtual platforms in developing countries, etc. By means of papers, workshops, roundtables and poster presentations on the featured topics, we hope to foster new perspectives, reflecting and anticipating scientific research in these fields in all its complexity.

The Fourth Lingnan-Tsinghua Translation Symposium, jointly organized by the Department of Translation at Lingnan University (Hong Kong) and the
Department of Foreign Languages at Tsinghua University (Beijing), will be held on 18-19 December 2010 at the Lingnan University campus, Hong Kong. It coincides with the tenth anniversary of research collaboration between the two universities, which began with the first symposium held in Beijing in 2000.

Within the broad framework of "Translation and Interpretation Research: Global and Local Contexts," the symposium will provide a forum for the discussion of issues related to translation and interpretation research in a globalized context, with a special focus on the synergetic relationship between work currently undertaken in China and theoretical trends developed elsewhere in the world. Papers on the following themes (as well as related ones) will be accepted for presentation:

→ Local and global translation studies
→ Chinese responses to Western theories of translation
→ Future perspectives for translation research in China
→ The non-Western turn in translation studies
→ Interpreting research, East and West
→ Translation historiography: Chinese and Western models
→ Postcolonial/feminist/sociological approaches to translation in China
→ Comparisons between different translation traditions

The official language is English, although a small number of papers in Chinese will be considered for presentation.

instituições. A BDM não oferecerá documentos correntes, a não ser "com valor de património, que permitirão apreciar e conhecer melhor as culturas do
mundo em idiomas diferentes: árabe, chinês, inglês, francês, russo, espanhol e português. Mas há documentos em linha em mais de 50 idiomas".

Entre os documentos mais antigos há alguns códices precolombianos, graças à contribuição do México, e os primeiros mapas da América, desenhados por
Diego Gutiérrez para o rei de Espanha em 1562", explicou Abid.

Entre as jóias que contem no momento a BDM está a Declaração de Independência dos Estados Unidos, assim como as Constituições de numerosos países; um texto japonês do século XVI considerado a primeira impressão da história; o jornal de um estudioso veneziano que acompanhou Fernão de Magalhães na sua viagem ao redor do mundo; o original das "Fábulas" de Lafontaine, o primeiro livro publicado nas Filipinas em espanhol e tagalog, a Bíblia de Gutemberg, e umas pinturas rupestres africanas que datam de 8.000 A.C.

COMMUNITY TRANSLATION: TRANSLATION AS A SOCIAL ACTIVITY AND ITS POSSIBLE CONSEQUENCES

The new communications infrastructure based on the latest generation Internet platforms of so called Web 2.0 could potentially have a formidable impact on translation. Like many other professions such as journalism and photography, translation faces challenges from the prevailing technological trends for 'openness', 'sharing' and 'collaboration', which are prompting user participation in otherwise well established professional activities. The user generated content resulting from such participation is spreading and blurring the boundary between professionals and non-professionals, who are particularly savvy Internet users. While
user participation in translation can run counter to maintaining professional standards and norms, it may serve to open new channels of communication. Minority languages are already benefitting from committed user contributions to translation, be it on Wikipedia or Facebook. With social networking increasing on Web 2.0 platforms, translation too is now a social activity undertaken by unspecified Internet users collaborating with a "virtual community" spirit (Rheingold, 2000). More recently termed "crowdsourcing" (Howe, 2008) such translation by people who are not trained as translators or at least are not remunerated for their translation work, has come to be known as social or community translation (DePalma & Kelly, 2008). Open-source software has a large contingency of often technically-minded volunteers happily involved in translation of associated documentation free of charge, while fans of media products such as anime take subtitling into their own hands so that what they consider to be good products can be shared more widely. Such practices stand on shaky ground legally where the intellectual property of the original product is infringed upon even though copyright holders may have turned a blind eye (Leonard, 2005). Besides, political activists are also using the platform, acting as translators to spread their messages across different languages. Some of these volunteer/fan translators seem to enjoy their status as contributors to the public good while improving their translation skills and gaining experience albeit in unofficial learning environments and despite some legal
implications. In the meantime, the professional translator community is showing some signs of unease (Kelly, 2009) ab out the rise of what it considers to be "the cult of the amateur" (Keen, 2007). In a different context, another, quite distinct form of translation, that of 'community interpreting' also originated among
non-professional practitioners (often family or friends). However, it became professionalized relatively quickly, and now (usually) forms part of legitimate practice within the field of interpreting. Can we draw a parallel between this and the new 'community translation', which has just entered the scene? Unlike community interpreting, the concept of community translation has evolved around technological platforms affording social networking, linking volunteer translators which are typically unspecified fans, activists, etc. to work together for a common cause. At this point, it is still an emerging paradigm and we can only speculate about its nature and the full extent of its impact. This tenth edition of Linguistica Antverpiensia New Series - Themes in Translation Studies seeks to address how far-reaching the consequences of the new trends afforded by new technological platforms may be, possibly affecting many different dimensions of translation. We are therefore inviting proposals that deal with one or several of the following issues:
1. What is the quality of user-generated translation such as crowdsourced translation? Is it developing norms of its own?
2. How reliable is quality assessment by users in cases such as translations on Facebook, where users vote on the quality of translation? Is this new type of quality assessment spreading to other areas and might it have an influence on translation quality control elsewhere? Is there interaction with translation quality control as exercised by companies?
3. Is there a difference in the nature of collaboration among professional translators and non-professional translators? How about collaboration cutting across the two groups?
4. How should we deal with ethical issues of businesses leveraging free user-generated translation?
5. Would professional ethics be relevant to non-professionally produced translation?
6. What are the implications for translators of open-source translation technology tools increasingly used by non-professionals as opposed to their proprietary counterpart tools?
7. Does (or do different forms of) community translation have an impact on translation as a profession?
8. Is community translation expanding and will it expand beyond the technological platforms where it evolved?
9. Do human rights groups like Amnesty International and NGOs make use of community translation and/or is it effective in promoting their objectives?
10. What are the effects of community translation on translator training, given its affinity with social constructivist approaches in providing 'authentic' training grounds, high learner motivations and co-construction of knowledge among the members of the group forming community of practice of a new kind?
11. Can one draw any parallels between community translation and community interpreting which is rapidly being professionalized and may be feeling the impact of social networking technologies?

The Survey results will go to create the AIIC Schools Directory, a list of interpreting Schools and Programmes that has, for many years, been a point of reference for prospective students of Conference Interpreting.

The Survey is part of AIIC's continuing efforts to promote good practice in the training of Conference Interpreters. A list of AIIC's recommendations for interpreting schools see our Best Practice page.

Translation: a World in Constant Evolution - Seventh Symposium on Translation, Terminology and Interpretation

Each day, we hear of new machine translation, translation memory, Web-page translation, localization and project management tools. These technologies require language professionals to be increasingly prepared in order to deliver service with the speed and quality clients demand. Some worship these tools; others criticize
them. But regardless of how we feel about them, they are here to stay.

- What impact do these tools have on the work of language professionals?

- Does machine translation pose a real threat to human translators?

- What are the advantages or disadvantages of these new technologies?

- Do we need to change the approach to translator, interpreter and terminology training?

The Asociación Cubana de Traductores e Intérpretes (ACTI) and the Canadian Translation, Terminology and Interpretation Council (CTTIC) invite everyone interested to debate these and other topics on December 7, 8 and 9, 2010 at the Seventh Symposium on Translation, Terminology and Interpretation. All those who work in the language field — professionals, researchers, members of professional associations or other related occupations — and who wish to present a
paper at the symposium should submit a summary of no more than 250 words to the organizing committee at the e-mail addresses indicated below by May 31, 2010. The committee will study the proposals and respond to the authors by July 31, 2010. Release of a preliminary program is planned for September. The final program will be made available a few weeks prior to the event.

Upon receiving this announcement, those interested in attending the symposium are invited to add their name to the preregistration list to ensure they receive all future notices. New information (program, exact dates, lodging, etc.) will be issued by e-mail as it becomes available. Registration for the conference is 180
Canadian dollars until October 30, 2010; from this date onward, the fee will be C$200. Participants will be advised later of the account number to which registration payments should be made.

To ensure the broadest distribution possible, please share this invitation with your translation, terminology and interpretation colleagues, as well as professional associations and colleges. The more numerous, diverse and representative the range of participants, the richer the debate and exchange on these topics so
important to us will be.

On 20-21 May 2010, the Centre for the Study of the Renaissance at the University of Warwick will host an international conference on translation, print and culture in Renaissance Britain. Speakers will address a range of topics dealing with translated works into and out of several languages. The conference is being held to mark the final phase of a Leverhulme-funded project, 'Renaissance Cultural Crossroads: An Analytical and Annotated Catalogue of Translations 1473-1640'. Both the catalogue and the conference will testify to the importance of Renaissance translation in a wide variety of fields, such as history, literature, philosophy, medicine, politics and theology. In these, and many more, it played a crucial role in disseminating knowledge. The conference will also demonstrate how
translation is closely bound up with the history of the book and the printing trade in the period.

The speakers at the conference are: Guyda Armstrong (Manchester), Sara Barker (Warwick), Anne Coldiron (Florida State), Robert Cummings (Glasgow), Susanna De Schepper (Warwick), A.G.W. Edwards (De Montfort), Paul G. The 4th International Media for All Conference Audiovisual Translation: Taking Stock aims to bring together professionals, scholars, practitioners and other interested parties to explore audiovisual translation (AVT) in theory and practice, to ascertain the language needs of distributors and broadcasters, to discuss the
linguistic and cultural dimensions of AVT, to look into potential synergies between the industry and the academic worlds, and to investigate the relevance and application of translation theory for this very specific and rapidly expanding translational genre. Special attention will be given to the notion of accessibility to information and to the social and economic implications of implementing appropriate quality standards.

In the global village of today, AVT is a form of communication expanding at a mind-boggling rate. Its active engagement with social, cultural, political, and technological changes calls for increased specialization and greater diversification on the part of practitioners, trainers, and researchers alike. AVT crosses many
disciplinary borders and offers a world of possibilities and challenges to its users. Markets worldwide are changing fast with distribution policies and strategies being shaped by political decisions, economic factors and audience expectations. AVT, from both the traditional translational perspective as well as the more
encompassing accessibility angle, is considered to be a tool for social integration. The conference organisers are especially interested in the progress being made in turning today's information society into an information society for all and in the links between AVT and other disciplines within translation studies, or even text
production. The traditional notion of what constitutes a text has been eroded and this has led to a converging of research areas and a need for more interdisciplinary approaches.

This conference aims to map the current status of AVT profession, research, production, and consumer needs. The complexity and the ways in which research input, technology, user needs and the business aspects of AVT intertwine, merits serious thought. By taking stock of developments on these and other fronts, Media for All 4 will address the many questions raised by the rapid expansion of audiovisual communication, rising to the challenges posed by translation in the
global market.

Through papers, panels, and round-table discussions, we hope to investigate these issues and to be able to promote new perspectives. We are inviting presentations reflecting the developments of our rapidly changing times within the scope of the themes listed below, and with a focus on audiovisual translation and media accessibility:

- Language transfer on screen: dubbing, interpreting, narration, opera and theatre surtitling, subtitling, voice-over, localisation, fandubbing, fansubbing
- Media access / cultural access: subtitling for the deaf and hard-of-hearing, live subtitling, respeaking, audio description, audio subtitling, sign language interpreting
- Innovation and new technologies: formats, platforms, 3D
- AVT in the global market: production and distribution, new trends, tools, needs, project management
- Professional practice: labour market, working conditions, standardization and harmonization, productivity, costs
- Professional ethics: public image of translators, relationship with clients and public organizations, the role of professional organizations, intellectual property rights, crowd sourcing and amateur translation
- Lobbies, policies, legislation, law enforcement and audience involvement
- History of AVT
- Quality standards and quality assurance
- Literacy and language learning/acquisition
- AVT research, old and new: globalisation, cultural transfer and nationalism
- Different (interdisciplinary) approaches (cognitive psychology, linguistics, discourse analysis, cultural studies, film studies...)
- Reception research and audience needs, broadcasting for minority audiences
- Censorship and manipulation
- AVT training: curricula, new needs, standards, didactics and skills

Proposals
Papers are allotted 20-minute slots to be followed by 10 minutes discussion (30 minutes in total). Proposals for papers should be presented on the abstract proposal form which can be downloaded from the website. Abstracts of 250-350 words should be sent to j.diaz-cintas@imperial.ac.uk by 15th November 2010. Notification of acceptance will be sent by 10 January 2011.

The 2 day conference, 30 June - 1 July 2011, will take place at Senate House.

A Translators' Petition Concerning ProZ.com's Job Policies

We, the undersigned, are a group of translators based around the world.

The purpose of this petition is two-fold. Firstly, it aims to protest against the way ProZ.com manages and supervises its job postings made available to both paying and non-paying ProZ.com members on its "Translation Industry Jobs" board. Secondly, it requests that ProZ.com revise its current policies and procedures on job postings, which we believe are harmful to individual translators and to the industry as a whole.

Over recent months, we have witnessed a steady and alarming increase in the number of ProZ.com job offers that contain rates and working conditions we
consider totally unacceptable. One recent example of such a post provoked the enraged reaction of thousands of translators and interpreters and was reported in the Italian national press, in addition to being widely discussed by thousands of other translators on translator mailing lists, blogs, Facebook, and elsewhere. The Italian Minister of Tourism ultimately released a statement disavowing the working conditions contained in the job posting that appeared on ProZ.com.

The post in question is only one example of many such job postings that appear daily on ProZ.com. For our part, we are convinced that such posts have always offended and continue to offend the dignity of professional freelance translators.

ProZ.com's company policy states that it aims to serve "the world's largest community of translators" and deliver "a comprehensive network of essential
services, resources and experiences that enhance the lives of its members."

Job postings that do not offer translators a living wage or which contain detrimental working conditions clearly fail to "enhance the lives" of translators. On the contrary, they actively harm our livelihoods and our profession.

To cite one specific example: the fact that ProZ.com allows job posters to set prices and conditions is, in itself, a form of "market distortion" and reveals one of the main reasons why we believe the ProZ.com job posting system is fundamentally flawed. When offering translation services, the freelance translator acts as a service provider, not as a client. To this respect, as in any freelance profession, we believe the freelancer and not the client should establish working conditions, prices, etc.

We hope that ProZ.com will take swift action to revise its job posting system to bring it in line with its stated mission to "serve translators" and deliver "essential services, resources and experiences that enhance" translators' lives. Such action is in all of our interests and would only enhance ProZ.com's reputation as a reliable, responsible service for translators and translation clients.

Until such time as ProZ.com takes clear, decisive steps to achieve that purpose, however, we shall be committed to taking the following action:

1) we will refrain from quoting on all jobs received through the ProZ.com posting system;
2) we will inform job posters of this protest and of the reasons for refusing to quote on their jobs;
3) we will refuse to join the ProZ.com site as subscription-paying members;
4) if we are currently paying members, we will not renew our memberships when they expire;
5) we will urge our colleagues, through every means at our disposal, to do the same.

The editors of Przekładaniec, a refereed bi-annual journal of literary translation published in Kraków, Poland, under the auspices of the UNESCO Chair for Translation Studies and Cultural Communication, invite submissions for the special issue devoted to

FEMINIST THOUGHT IN TRANSLATION

We would like to focus on the interaction between feminist criticism and translation studies. The following areas of research might be considered:
1. Historical approach: presentation of female translators and editors of translations; genres favoured by female translators; female translators whose work has been 'claimed' by male authors of translations; the process of editing out 'traces' of lesbian love in translation; the recording of slogans and phrases typical of feminist movement.
2. Poetics of translation: terminological challenges (e.g. the term gender in translation); gender and its grammatical representation (the blurring of the female/male category boundaries, deliberate nondiscrimination between personal pronouns, neologisms); syntax and its disturbances (e.g. translation of texts which counter phallocentric discursive practices).
3. Theory of translation: the binary opposition between the original and the translation; discussion of the meaning of grammatical gender; parallels between feminism and postcolonialism (multiplicity of languages) in translation; politics of translation.

Contributions of up to 5000 words in English, German, French, Italian and Polish should be emailed as word attachments to przekladaniec@uj.edu.pl. The deadline is 30 August 2010. The accepted articles will be published in Polish. We are waiting for 500 word abstracts until June 1, 2010. The feminist issue is guest-edited by dr

Después de dos años de interrupción, la revista Hieronymus Complutensis que edita el Instituto Universitario de Lenguas Modernas y Traductores de la Universidad Complutense de Madrid inicia una nueva andadura.

Incluida ahora en el catálogo del Servicio de Publicaciones de nuestra Universidad, Hieronymus Complutensis entrará a formar parte del amplio catálogo de revistas científicas complutenses (más de 40), lo que le facilitará una rápida introducción en bases de datos, índices de impacto y catálogos.

Está previsto que el primer número de esta segunda época vea la luz en 2010 con una periodicidad anual. En este sentido aprovecho esta ocasión para invitar a todos aquellos interesados a enviar artículos o reseñas para su evaluación y posible publicación a la siguiente dirección de correo electrónico: iulmyt@filol.ucm.es

El plazo de presentación de artículos finaliza el 30 de mayo del presente año. Las lenguas de publicación son: español, inglés, francés, alemán e italiano. Las normas formales que deben contemplar todos los artículos se incluyen a pie de página.

Normas de publicación HC:

1.. Todos los artículos deberán contener un resumen y palabras clave en la lengua en la que esté escrita el artículo y en inglés; si el artículo está escrito en una lengua que no sea español, deberá contener asimismo el resumen y las palabras clave en esta lengua;
2.. Título en inglés;
3.. Sumario en la lengua en que esté escrito el idioma, 4.. Todas las colaboraciones deberán ajustarse al formato siguiente: tamaño de página 17 x 24, márgenes superior e inferior 2,6 cm., izquierdo 2,1 cm y derecho 1,8 cm.; tipo de letra Times New Roman 11 e interlineado exacto a 12; la primera línea de cada párrafo tendrá un espacio de 0,5 cm. Los títulos de los epígrafes irán en negrita y mayúscula, los subepígrafes de primer nivel en redonda y negrita y los subepígrafes de segundo nivel en cursiva. Las citas superiores a 4 líneas se sangrarán del cuerpo del texto 1 cm a la izquierda e irán en tipo Times New Roman 10, interlineado exacto a 11 y sin comillas. Las notas irán a pie de página en Times New Roman 10 e interlineado exacto a 11.
5. Los Artículos presentados tendrán una extensión máxima de 15 páginas.

Rationale

The conference will aim to:
• bring together a group of established and emerging researchers in applied language and literacy studies who are interested in the transnational, translocal and global movements of people, language and literacy in relation to social practice;

CALL FOR PAPERS
We invite the participation of researchers who are committed to exploring the contribution that language and literacy studies, interacting with social theory and ethnographic perspectives, can make to emergent understandings of mobility and migrancy. The conference will feature key contributions from core participants in the three AILA Research Networks who are collectively hosting the conference as well as other invited scholars. We also aim to establish connections and conversations with a broader range of researchers and scholars. We plan that it will be an agenda-setting conference, in that we will aim to identify future directions for research and co-operation in mobility, language and literacy studies. Presentations will include a mix of theoretical and field-based contributions as well as panel discussions. There will be a blend of invited keynote addresses, themed sessions where a range of papers around a common topic will be presented, as well as working panels centred on core concerns and discussion of work in progress and planning.

The conference will be organised around themes and issue-centred concerns, and there will be a core of invited contributions on these topics. We invite papers on topics such as:
• language and migration as transnational and translocal processes rather than one-way experiences of leaving one country or domain and entering another;
• the language or textual practices that help sustain transnational networks and make possible enduring translocal ties;
• language/ literacy and the relationship between geographic space and social identification
• multilingualism and the production of locality in the globalized era;
• linguistic innovation, cultural 'mixing', and transnational/translocal identities;
• the politics and practices of globalisation as they impact on language and literacy in social practice (including work and educational practices);
• language, literacy and social selection processes in education and in the workplace in multilingual settings (e.g., the role of language and literacy skills in recruitment processes or job performance, with attendant issues of measurement and evaluation);
• language and literacy teaching for migrants and acquisition of language proficiencies on the workfloor and in education;
• the language experiences and learning opportunities of children as the resources of family intersect with institutions such as schools;
• social networks as channels through which social class and ethnic group membership devolve into experiences of language;
• trust, solidarity and language practices in transnational and translocal social networks;
• the capitalization by employers of migrant language skills in the management of multilingualism (through commodification of language and identity and/or the (non)-recognition of crucial multilingual practices);
• the role of language in the regulation of labour market related migration trajectories;
• standardised education, training and assessment practices in relation to the multilingual resources of border-crossing and otherwise mobile persons and groups;
• intertwinings of class and ethnicity and their influence on learning and learning identities; ethnicity and class as processual, linguistic and interactional concepts;
• situated cognition, social identification, and academic learning in multilingual, multinational, and multiethnic classroom contexts;

Convocatoria 2010: Se convoca a traductores, profesores e investigadores en el campo de la traducción literaria a participar en la XIX emisión del Encuentro Internacional de Traductores Literarios, que tendrá lugar en la ciudad de México del 6 al 8 de octubre de 2010 y cuyo tema central será "Traductores e investigadores: vecinos distantes".

A medida que se van diversificando y especializando las investigaciones sobre la traducción, el hiato entre traductores e investigadores se hace más patente. No son pocos los traductores literarios que afirman que los teóricos y los investigadores en el campo de la traducción no traducen, y estos últimos en ocasiones no conceden al ejercicio de la traducción el lugar que se merece.
¿Por qué se alejan cada vez más estos dos grupos de profesionales de la traducción, cuando por el contrario deberían mantener un diálogo permanente?
¿Hasta qué punto las estructuras de los sistemas académico y editorial acentúan este distanciamiento que en realidad no es nuevo?

Los invitamos a presentar, debatir, confrontar y divulgar sus reflexiones, investigaciones o talleres en torno a éstas y muchas otras cuestiones relacionadas con el ejercicio de la práctica y la investigación en el campo de la traducción.

The seminar invites contributions on topics related to curriculum development, syllabus compilation, methodological planning, materials development and pedagogical interaction tailored to higher education and continuous professional development training in the areas of the ever-growing language industry and its English language component. Language professions such as translator, terminologist, reviser, interpreter, subtitler, dubber etc. are making their way into the curriculum of many European programs with English being omnipresent in the language combinations offered to trainees. To meet the demands of the market and the expectations of trainees without forfeiting academic, research-oriented goals, such programs frequently exhibit an innovative academic/vocational perspective in the variety of training methodologies applied. The International Conference on Audiovisual Translation in Krakow is a response to a growing body of research in this area with ever-increasing demands placed on interpreters and translators. Applications are invited for the next EST Young Scholar Award, to be presented at the EST Congress in Leuven in September 2010, with the financial support of John Benjamins. The value of the award is € 2,500,00.

What is the Award for?
The Award is for a significant contribution by a young scholar to Translation or Interpreting Studies, such as a doctoral thesis or equivalent monograph, not necessarily published. The work must have been completed since the deadline for submissions for the previous award, January 31, 2007.

Who can apply?
Applicants must be members of EST at the time of application.
Applicants must apply in person. Teachers are requested to draw the Award to the attention of potential applicants.

How and when to apply?

SCREENIT 2010: The changing face of screen translation

ScreenIt 2010 is one of the many conferences and workshops being held in celebration of the 20th anniversary of the foundation of the University of Bologna's prestigious Advanced School in Modern Languages for Translators and Interpreters (Forlì), which, by a singular twist of fate, also happens to coincide with the 10th anniversary of the city's Department of Interdisciplinary Studies in Languages, Translation and Cultures.

The early ninetieth witnessed the birth of audiovisual translation research in Italy, (and we like to think, in Europe as a whole) with the 1993 conference that brought together scholars and practitioners from across Europe. This first conference gave life to a whole new area of research. Since then, through the interaction of professionals and researchers, Forlì has hosted several international conferences as well as a series of EU funded summer schools in collaboration with seven European universities and a Master's programme dedicated to Screen Translation. However, most of all, Forlì is well known for its thriving cutting edge research in screen translation. With ScreenIt 2010, the Forlì research group, in collaboration with Elena Di Giovanni from the University of Macerata, aims at updating and refreshing ideas twenty years on.

We encourage proposals for presentations (20 minutes + questions) and posters on all areas of Screen Translation.

Topics for presentations may include, but are not restricted to the following: new audiences, new research and new translation practices methodology in interdisciplinary screen translation research accessibility and its impact on the audience the changing face of dubbing and subtitling new technologies in audiovisual translation localization of video games the perception of screen translation teamwork, crowd-sourcing and the future of screen translation.

Translation is usually about the printed word, but in today's multimodal environment translators must take account of other signifying elements too. Words may interact with still and moving images, diagrams, music, typography or page layout. Multimodal meaningmaking is deployed for promotional, political, expressive and informative purposes which must be understood and accounted for by technical translators, literary translators, copywriters, subtitlers, localisers and other language professionals. The organisers of the tenth annual Portsmouth Translation Conference invite contributions from translation and interpreting professionals and scholars on the challenges posed to translators by multimodality. Within the increasing complexities of global flows and encounters, intercultural skills and competencies are being challenged and and re-imagined. The vital role of languages and the intricacies of intercultural dialogue have largely remained implicit in the discourses surrounding mobilities. This Conference seeks to interrogate the role of
intercultural communication and of languages in the inevitable moments of encounter which arise from all forms of 'motion'. This international and interdisciplinary event is the 10th anniversary conference of the International Association of Languages and Intercultural Communication (IALIC) and is being organised in association with the Centre for Tourism and Cultural Change. Through this event we aim to bring together many of the sub-themes of previous IALIC conferences and focus upon the issues of culture, communication and translation in a mobile world, including: languages and intercultural communication in local and global education, tourism, hospitality, migration, translation, real and virtual border-crossings.

CALL FOR PAPERS
We are pleased to receive 20 –minute research papers or descriptions of pedagogical practice which address or go beyond the following themes:
· Moving languages - continuities and change;

Following the success of the 5th International Postgraduate Conference in Translation and Interpreting Studies (IPCITI) held at Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh, we are pleased to announce that the 6th
conference in this series will be hosted by the University of Manchester on 29-31 October, 2010.

The IPCITI series, organised collaboratively between the University of Edinburgh, Dublin City University, Heriot-Watt University and the University of Manchester, is intended to give young researchers an
opportunity to share their research in a supportive environment among peers and to participate in a significant international networking event for postgraduates in T&I studies.

CONFERENCE AIMS
This conference aspires to address some of the issues raised in the previous conference, and will particularly focus on new perspectives within the discipline, the application of such research in new
settings, and the impact of these new developments.

The move away from the view of Translation, in its broadest sense, as mere linguistic transference to a more complex and multifaceted activity has introduced a myriad of research avenues within T&I
studies. This blurring of disciplinary boundaries has not only precipitated shifts in academia but in translational practice as well. This conference therefore aims to provide a forum for discussing new
perspectives in research, with special emphasis on those that adopt new approaches, investigate new settings and have potential socio-political, ideological and commercial impact. We particularly

Our mission
The mission of the Egyptian Translators and Linguists' Association (ETLA) is to achieve a revival in the field of translation and language in Egypt and create an elite of qualified translators who appreciate the
value of translation, cope with scientific developments, and are aware of the changes that take place in the world, in order to achieve such revival.

Our Vision
ETLA's vision is that the reasons for the regression that we currently undergo are social, economic and cultural isolation, and the decline of the translation profession. But all these negative factors do not
acquit the translator who has lost his identity and status and, as a result, societal respect; hence, the translation profession has become one of the careers that are difficult to assess. Therefore, the
Association's vision is based on the need to restore the translator's prestige within the intellectual and cultural arena. This can only happen through competent translators qualified under international
professional standards. Hence, the translator will be able to create a new reality for himself and his profession in a society that recognize his high-level role.

Plans and Strategies
ETLA has laid down plans based on the fundamentals of strategic planning, through phased plans which achieve its objectives on both short and long runs. The main feature which distinguishes these plans is the application of scientific methods in planning, through the realistic assessment of resources and challenges. ETLA also takes the expected changes into consideration, and draws up its plans on the basis of flexible and well-studied application. The current plans are not inflexible, but they can be modified and developed according to changing circumstances. ETLA's members are those who determine the goals and methods of implementing the plans, through their experience and positions...

ETLA's Structure:
An elected board of directors manages the Association through its members who work on implementing the ETLA's objectives, doing their best to achieve the interest of the members and the society.
The decision makers, planners and those implementing plans are the ETLA members. This means that thought, strategic planning, and application are not exclusive to a certain member, as the Association belongs to all its members, and its management is mainly based on collective consultation and assessment.

Membership
According to the ETLA's mission and objectives, membership is accessible to those working in fields of translation, language, those involved in this career and students, as well as creators and intellectuals. The translator is in need to the linguist who maintains the rules of language amidst the new expressions and terms which the translator transmits. The translator conveys up-to-date terms to the linguist who, in turn, sets them in the language's structure. The translator conveys to his society new terms, expressions and ideas which come from other societies. What he conveys may find a fertile ground in
his country. If the reader is a creator, the cultural movement will flourish and bear fruit.

ETLA's Political and Intellectual Trends
ETLA does not represent any political, partisan or sectarian category. It respects law and works under its umbrella. It takes its members away from disunity resulted from political, ideological or partisan
classification. However, it respects their personal freedom and does not impose any kind of restrictions on them. It is noteworthy to restate that ETLA should not be exploited or inclined towards a certain attitude of any individual or entity.

ETLA's Financial Resources
ETLA works under the Egyptian law regarding its resources of funding, and at the same time does not resort to any other resource of funding such as entities or individuals, that may enable them to have an upper hand, in order to avert their domination. Therefore, the most important resource of funding is the subscriptions of the Association's members, and the returns of its activities. Available financial resources as well as their sufficiency during growth stages of ELTA and its activities are carefully considered to ensure their continuity and growth.

What Distinguishes the ELTA from Other Comparable Entities?
ELTA is a non-profit institution, seeking to create a comprehensive language and translation revival. It aims to benefit the translator and linguist, as well as the translation industry and the whole society.
ELTA is an entity through which efforts of translators, linguists, and creators are collectively combined, exchanging their experiences and skills. Thus, ETLA practices direct communication between broader sectors of distinguished categories which can benefit each other regarding information, knowledge, skills and capabilities. ELTA realizes the significant role of the translator and linguist as parts of their

ETLA activities include: training courses and for translators and linguists in the fields of translation and other sciences that serve the translation profession and its development. In addition, ETLA presents
educational seminars to link the translator with the world changes and its events. It organizes conferences and workshops in various fields related to translation, language and creativity, and it offers
professional promotion for the translator locally and internationally. It also supports individual projects, particularly those related to the development of translation and publication of works. It also upholds the
interests of the members and their profession, coordinates their efforts, and creates areas of cooperation between them and bodies or institutions concerned with their interests. In addition, it is
establishing an information centre, translation services, and preparing for publishing a manual guide of translators in the Arab Republic of Egypt.
Moreover, it exchanges experience with prestigious academies and institutions at home and abroad to promote the expertise of members, and put them in a distinguished position within the translation industry system.

ETLA accredits those proved to have expertise in practicing translation as a profession and relevant linguistic activities according to the highest standards applied worldwide, which are recognized by academic bodies, international organizations and ancient prestigious entities... Therefore, the ELTA has strict conditions imposed on a translator to be accredited. The most important prerequisite is to pass the accreditation test. Applications are invited for the position of Assistant Professor in Chinese-English translation in the Translation Programme. The Programme was established in 1990 with the aim of training sophisticated
cross-cultural communicators to serve the local community and the Mainland of China. The media of instruction are English and Cantonese/Putonghua. In addition to undergraduate and postgraduate
teaching, the appointee will also be expected to play an active role in related research and publication, and be responsible for supervision of undergraduate honors projects and postgraduate dissertations at the Master and Doctoral level.

Applicants should possess a PhD Degree in Translation or related fields, experience in research and teaching at the tertiary level, and preferably some administrative experience. The successful candidate is expected to have expertise in the practical and theoretical dimensions of interpreting and/or Chinese-English translation, especially translation in the fields of literature, culture and the creative industries. Dedication to excellence in teaching and in research is essential, as is commitment to professional work in the field.

Initial appointment will be made on a fixed-term contract of two to three years. Re-appointment thereafter is subject to mutual agreement.

Volunteer Interpreters and Translators needed for the Haiti Relief Effort. By now we are all painfully aware of the situation in Haiti following the devastating earthquake last week. The National Association of Judiciary Interpreters and Translators and the American Red Cross are seeking Haitian Creole and French interpreters and translators to assist in this time of great need. Interpreters are needed for two types of assignments – either at the American Red Cross Headquarters in Washington DC (immediate need) or on the hospital ship USNS Comfort off the coast of Haiti (anticipated future need).

Immediate Need
The American Red Cross wishes to identify and recruit a Haitian Creole and French interpreter and translator to work at its National Headquarters Office in Washington for periods of between one to three weeks. The volunteer will support the International Services Department (ISD) in response to the earthquake in Haiti by sharing information with Haitian Creole speakers in the United States, translating documents from various ISD offices and/or American Red Cross chapters around the country, may be called upon to record messages in Haitian Creole or respond to inquiries from Haitian Creole speakers by telephone or in writing. Presentación: la rápida expansión de los formatos audiovisuales y multimedia en el ámbito de la comunicación en general, y en el de la industria del entretenimiento digital en particular hace necesaria la formación de profesionales capaces de aplicar las nuevas tecnologías en un ámbito tan novedoso como la traducción de videojuegos.
El presente curso pretende familiarizar a los alumnos con este tipo de traducción a caballo entre la traducción audiovisual y la localización de software, conocida como localización de videojuegos.
